Norwegian meat producer announces major cut-backs

Norway’s largest meat processing company, Nortura, has announced major cut-backs, including 2000 fewer jobs, following record losses amounting to NOK 244 million in the first four months of the year.

The cut-backs will also mean fewer processing plants and fewer products, according to the company.

“The customers are buying cheaper products. This strongly affects our bottom line,” says Nortura CEO Geir Olav Opheim.

The group has a turnover of NOK 17 billion, with 6,500 employees in different industries in 37 municipalities all over the country.

The group is organized as a cooperative owned by 28,100 Norwegian farmers, and is the result of a merger in 2006 of Prior and Gilde.
