Norwegian opera star Solveig Kringlebotn, from Drøbak, made her debut in Oslo’s Opera House last weekend, as the mermaid Rusalka.

In Rusalka, Antonin Dvorák’s beautiful music takes us into the wondrous world of a story you may already be familiar with. H.C. Andersen’s The Little Mermaid is based on the same fairytale the Czech composer based his opera on in 1900.

Rusalka is a water nymph that longs to be a woman and have the ability to feel passion. She seeks help from the witch Jezibaba, but discovers that being transformed into something different has a high cost. Rusalka’s infatuation with the handsome prince becomes her fate.

Rusalka has never before been performed in Norway. The title role is sung by Solveig Kringelbotn and Valeria Stenkina, who are both new, permanent members of the National Opera’s soloist ensemble.
